Joseph, “Mzee wa Chapati”: From a Street Cook to Life on the Streets

Joseph was once a familiar face near Country Bus. From early morning until late in the evening, he stood by the roadside preparing and selling chapati. His hands were always covered in flour, and the scent of freshly cooked chapati often drew regular customers who knew him well. Many called him “Mzee wa Chapati.”

For Joseph, this small business was more than a source of income. It was his way of surviving and building a better life one day at a time. With every sale, he held onto the hope that things would improve.

Then, life became harder.

The cost of flour began to rise. Cooking oil became more expensive. Rent became difficult to maintain. At the same time, the number of customers slowly reduced. What once felt like a stable small business began to collapse under growing financial pressure. Debts accumulated, and Joseph found himself unable to keep the business going.

What hurt him most was not just losing his livelihood, but losing the identity he had built around it.

Over time, Joseph began to withdraw. Depression quietly took hold. The man who once served customers with a smile and pride in his work now spends his days on the streets, struggling with hopelessness and exhaustion.

When you see Joseph today, it is easy to miss the story behind him. But behind the struggle is someone who once worked hard, contributed to his community, and believed in building a better future through honest work.

Joseph’s situation reflects how quickly life circumstances can change, and how easily someone can slip into hardship when support systems are no longer within reach.

At this moment, Joseph needs support to access rehabilitation, emotional care, and pathways that can help him rebuild stability and reconnect with dignity.

Every person has a story before the streets. Joseph’s story is one of effort, resilience, and loss, but it is not a closed chapter.

With the right support, there is still hope for him to find his way back to stability and a life beyond survival.
