John Walked from Kisumu to Nairobi. Now He Sells Sweets.
John the Baptist walked from Kisumu to Nairobi carrying little more than the pain he was trying to escape.
After losing his mother, life became increasingly difficult. Conflicts within his family eventually led John to make the painful decision to leave home. With nowhere else to turn, he made the long journey to Nairobi on foot, hoping he could find a different life.
When we found John, there was more to his story than the circumstances we saw in front of us. He had been through loss, disappointment, and rejection, but his story was not over.
We brought him into our care, where he received counseling and support. Then came a more important question: what could John do to begin building a life of his own?
Today, John sells sweets in traffic.
It may be a small business, but it has given him something much bigger: a way to earn, a sense of independence, and a reason to keep moving forward.
John does not need to be defined by the circumstances that brought him to the streets. He needs the opportunity to build on what he has started.
“Sometimes an orphan doesn’t need pity; they need someone to believe in them.”
If you meet John the Baptist selling sweets in traffic, buy a sweet. Talk to him. Encourage his business. That simple act can help him keep going.
John arrived in Nairobi with very little. Today, he has something he can call his own. And sometimes, rebuilding a life starts with something as small as a packet of sweets.
